New Zealand stand-in skipper Tom Latham has not written off his team’s chances of claiming back-to-back World Test Championships (WTC), despite their defeat in the second Test to South Africa leaving the Black Caps’ defense on shaky ground.
Held to 1-1 home series draws by South Africa and Bangladesh, after losing 1-0 away to India late last year, New Zealand are languishing at sixth on the WTC table ahead of a tour to England.
Latham said his team believes “100 percent” that they can still make next year’s WTC final and would look to sweep England in the three-Test series starting in June.

“Obviously, you set out with the ambition of winning every Test match you play, especially at home,” he told reporters after the 198-run loss to the Proteas at Hagley Oval. “For us, I guess, when we get to England in a few months’ time, it’s obviously important that we shift our focus to that and try our best to win that series over there and get as many points as we can.”
Having handed South Africa their second-worst Test defeat in the first Christchurch clash, New Zealand missed a golden opportunity to win their first Test series against the South Africans and end a winless streak dating back to the 1931-1932 season.
The Black Caps hope that regular captain Kane Williamson, their best batsman, can fully recover from an elbow injury that has plagued him for more than a year.
Latham, whose opening combination with Will Young produced a total of four runs in the second Test, said that his side’s failure to build partnerships was a major factor in the defeat.
However, Latham declined to blame his batsmen for poor shot selection on the fifth day after wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme were out hitting lofted pull-shots to fielders, effectively ending their hopes of saving the match.
“Guys have their own ways that they like to go about things,” Latham said.
“I guess it’s a fine balance of being able to put them under a little bit of pressure to get fielders out of spots that you want,” he said. “Unfortunately things didn’t go quite so well for us.”
SSC Napoli’s Italian Serie A title hopes suffered a late setback on Sunday when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Genoa, setting up a thrilling season finale with closest rivals Inter just one point behind. The hosts remain top with 78 points, holding a slim lead over Inter, who won 2-0 at Torino earlier on Sunday, with two rounds remaining. To make matters worse for Napoli, midfielder Stanislav Lobotka, struggling with an ankle injury, was forced off just minutes after the match began. Scott McTominay delivered a perfect pass into the box where Romelu Lukaku got
A stunning Lamine Yamal strike on Thursday helped crown Barcelona La Liga champions with a 2-0 win over local rivals RCD Espanyol, with victory ensuring Real Madrid cannot catch them at the top of the table. Yamal’s effort and Fermin Lopez’s goal took Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Los Blancos with two matches remaining, to clinch Barcelona’s 28th title and complete a superb domestic treble. Only the UEFA Champions League title escaped an exciting young Barca side this season, as they won the league for the second time in six years, at Espanyol’s ground again just as in 2022-2023. American Gauff is to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in today’s title match after pulling through 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a match that lasted over three-and-a-half hours. Ruud was supposed to be Sinner’s toughest test in Rome since he came back from his three-month doping ban, as the Norwegian came into the match in hot form on clay after winning in
