Ultra-endurance cyclist Laura Scott has shrugged off injuries to join a huge “virtual peloton” from her living room to raise money for Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) during the COVID-19 lockdown.
The Around the World in One Day event — held on Thursdays — brings together hundreds of cyclists to replicate a day in the life of Mark Beaumont’s record-breaking circumnavigation of the globe in 2017.
Beaumont is leading the fundraising charge for NHS Charities Together, along with female record holder Jenny Graham. Rowers are also taking part.

Canadian-British rider Scott only decided to do the whole 386km distance on Wednesday and was scrabbling around for energy-boosting food right up until the last moment.
“It was probably one of the tougher things I’ve done,” she said after the 13-hour marathon. “When you ride outside, the scenery changes and you get a break from pedaling if you go downhill. I usually complain to my coach if an indoor training session goes on for more than an hour.”
In 2016, Scott took part in the Trans Am Bike Race, completing 3,541km with a dislocated shoulder and fractured collarbone after being hit by a car on day one, before being forced to pull out.
Two years later, she competed in the TransAtlantic Way, a 2500km race in Ireland, but she has been badly hampered by injury over the past year.
Scott, 35, has been riding about one hour per day for four or five days per week during the coronavirus lockdown, but Thursday’s event was a huge step up in distance.
She started her ride at 4am and initially broke it up into four-hour chunks, needing more breaks toward the end.
“It was good to start off with, but I think I hit about 200 miles [322km] and the last 40 miles [64km] were tough,” she said. “I tore ligaments in my ankle in December. I have had six months off my bike until four weeks ago and lots of my energy gels had expired.”
Cyclists and rowers have raised more than £170,000 (US$210,000) so far through Virgin Money.
Next Thursday’s event is likely to be the final one.
The pressure was already on Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso before their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday in the UEFA Champions League raised further questions about his future. Arsenal remain perfect in this season’s competition and three points clear at the top of the standings after a 3-0 win against Club Brugge, while defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were held 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao. The clash between Madrid and City was the standout game of the round amid reports this week that Alonso had lost control of the locker room. Speculation over his position is likely to intensify after the latest
By the time Cameron Menzies finally left the arena on Monday, the blood gushing from the gash on his right hand had trickled down his wrist, part of his forearm and — somehow — up to his face. Smeared in crimson and regret, and already mouthing sheepish apologies to the crowd, he disappeared down the steps, pursued by a stern-looking Matt Porter, the chief executive of Professional Darts Corp (PDC). The physical scars from Menzies’ encounter with the Alexandra Palace drinks table after his 3-2 defeat against Charlie Manby at the Darts World Championship would be gone within a few weeks.
Manchester United on Monday blew the lead three times to miss out on moving up to fifth in the Premier League as AFC Bournemouth would not be beaten in a thrilling 4-4 draw at Old Trafford. United have lost just once in their past 10 games, but Ruben Amorim would be frustrated as more points at home were frittered away despite arguably the best attacking display of his reign in charge. Amad Diallo and Casemiro gave the hosts a halftime lead either side of Antoine Semenyo’s equalizer. Two Bournemouth goals from Evanilson and Marcus Tavernier in seven minutes at the start of the
