John Wall had that look in his eye at morning shootaround.
Bradley Beal knew it was going to be a big night for Washington’s star point guard.
Wall scored 42 points — a career playoff high, with 19 coming in the fourth quarter to single-handedly hold off a furious Atlanta comeback — as the Wizards eliminated the Hawks with a 115-99 victory on Friday, capturing the opening-round playoff series 4-2.

“You could just tell he was locked in,” Beal said. “He was ready to go. We just feed off that.”
Beal wasn’t too shabby either, scoring 31 points.
However, this one was all about Wall, who stared down the crowd, jawed with NFL star Julio Jones and other celebrities sitting courtside and hit every big shot down the stretch.

He was determined to get back at the Hawks for a second-round loss in 2015, when he missed three games with a broken hand.
“We came here with that focus and determination that we wanted to do the same thing those guys did to us two years ago,” Wall said.
“Me and Brad led the way. We locked in. Our teammates understood what we had [to do]. We didn’t want to have a Game 7,” he said.

Wall also came up with a huge defensive play that stymied the Hawks’ momentum, hustling back to block Dennis Schroder’s layup from behind when Atlanta had a chance to close within a single point after being down by as many as 22.
“I knew he was going to get it,” Beal said. “That was an easy play for him.”
After claiming the first road victory by either team in the series, the Wizards advanced to face the top-seeded Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, with Game 1 to be played today in Boston.

Paul Millsap led the Hawks with 31 points, and Schroder had 26. After losing three close games in Washington, the Hawks finally ran out of steam.
“It’s tough to get back in the game and then to get over the hump down the stretch,” Millsap said. “You wear yourself out so much that it’s tough to get over the hump.”
After his big block on Schroder, Wall somehow got one to fall as he slammed into Millsap, further silencing a crowd that was in a frenzy with the home team rallying.
Atlanta’s Jose Calderon missed a three-pointer and Wall knocked down a pullup jumper to stretch the lead to 97-90.
That was it.
Washington finished on a 22-9 spurt to win going away.
The Hawks made their earliest exit from the playoffs since 2014, when they lost to Indiana in the opening round.
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
TIGHT FINISH: Napoli only needed to do the same as or better than Inter, who won their game against Como 2-0 on the same day, leaving Napoli with a one-point lead The two players who Antonio Conte wanted more than any others secured Napoli their second Serie A title in three years on Friday. Scott McTominay scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick before halftime and Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead with a solo goal after the break in the decisive 2-0 home win over Cagliari. Conte became the first coach to win the Italian championship with three different teams. “Everyone contributed to this — but the coach most of all,” Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo said. “Napoli needed him to get back on top. He’s phenomenal.” Comparing it to his three Serie A titles won

SSC Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dragged the team back from disaster and restored them to the top of Italian Serie A, but his future at the Scudetto winners is in doubt even after a triumphant season. The fiery 55-year-old has exceeded preseason expectations and bolstered his reputation as a serial winner by guiding Napoli to their fourth Scudetto, and second in three seasons. However, he might well be on his way in the summer after just one season at the helm as his charged relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has simmered throughout the campaign. Conte has said
