Cristiano Ronaldo continued his prolific start to the season with four goals, including two penalties, as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Elche 5-1 in La Liga on Tuesday.
The Portuguese player made a bad start by conceding a 15th-minute penalty for a foul on Pedro Mosquera, with Edu Albacar sweeping the ball home past Keylor Navas, making his official debut in the Real goal.
Gareth Bale quickly put Real back on track as he headed in a James Rodriguez cross five minutes later and then the referee pointed to the spot for a foul by Mosquera on Marcelo, even though there was marginal contact.

Ronaldo fired in the 28th-minute penalty and headed home a Marcelo cross four minutes later to extend Real’s lead.
He was then upended by Mario Pasalic with 10 minutes to go and slotted home his second spot-kick, while there was still time for another goal from Ronaldo deep in stoppage-time when he finished clinically in the penalty area.
The World Player of the Year now has seven goals in four days after the hat-trick he scored on Saturday in the 8-2 win over RC Deportivo de La Coruna.
While Real have played some brilliant soccer, they have looked vulnerable in defense and are three points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona, who have 12 points and a game in hand. They were due to play Malaga yesterday.
Champions Atletico have eight points from four games and were due to play UD Almeria yesterday.
“I’ve managed to get four a few times before, but this is all down to the team. Things are going for me and it is down to my teammates, who help me a lot,” Ronaldo told reporters at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“It was a good game for us. We started poorly, I gave away a penalty, but we responded well with two quick goals,” he added.
Real coach Carlo Ancelotti made several changes for the fixture, with 29-year-old Ronaldo the oldest player in a youthful-looking starting lineup.
Isco and Asier Illarramendi, who looked sharp when they came on against Deportivo, were rewarded with starts, while Ronaldo and Bale were given more central roles in attack with Karim Benzema rested.
Ronaldo was unforgiving as he buried his first spot-kick of the evening into the top corner to put Real ahead and the home side then began to play the ball around with more confidence.
Elche concentrated on containing Real after the break, but Ronaldo still added two more and Toni Kroos was centimeters away from scoring as well when his shot from inside the area came back off the crossbar.
RC Celta de Vigo survived a late penalty scare in a 2-1 win over local rivals Deportivo when Sergio Alvarez saved from midfielder Haris Medunjanin two minutes from time.
Joaquin Larrivey headed Celta in front midway through the second half after Isaac Cuenca had canceled out Nolito’s early strike, but Depor had the chance to equalize when Gustavo Cabral handled in the penalty area.
Medunjanin’s spot-kick was heading for the corner, but Alvarez got down to beat it away.
“It was a great moment for me, but the most important thing was the win,” Alvarez told reporters. “It was a tough game as we expected and a good performance from us.”
Bologna on Thursday advanced past Empoli to reach their first Coppa Italia final in more than half a century. Thijs Dallinga’s 87th-minute header earned Bologna a 2-1 win and his side advanced 5-1 on aggregate. Giovanni Fabbian opened the scoring for Bologna with a header seven minutes in. Then Viktor Kovalenko equalized for Empoli in the 30th minute by turning in a rebound to finish off a counterattack. Bologna won the first leg 3-0. In the May 14 final in Rome, Bologna are to face AC Milan, who eliminated city rivals Inter 4-1 on aggregate following a 3-0 win on Wednesday. Bologna last reached the
The Minnesota Timberwolves, with so many promising performances spoiled by late mistakes fresh in their memory bank, sure timed this strong finish well. Jaden McDaniels scored a career playoff-high 30 points and spearheaded Minnesota’s stifling defense on an ailing Luka Doncic, and the Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 116-104 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night. “Jaden never looks tired. He looks like he could play 48 minutes,” said teammate Anthony Edwards, who had 29 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Julius Randle added 22 points for the Wolves, who outscored
Inter’s defense of their Italian Serie A title was hit with a setback on Sunday as they lost 1-0 at home to AS Roma, while Scott McTominay netted a brace as SSC Napoli beat Torino 2-0 to go top of the table. No fixtures were played on Friday or Saturday because of the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, meaning the full round of Serie A matches took place on Sunday and yesterday. Matias Soule’s first-half strike for Roma knocked Inter off top spot earlier in the day before new Napoli opened up a three-point buffer with victory in Sunday’s
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa yesterday set a women’s only world record of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 50 seconds as she won the London Marathon, while Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe put a star-studded men’s field to the sword. For 28-year-old Assefa it was ample compensation for finishing runner-up in London and the Paris Olympics last year — especially as bitter Dutch rival, the Ethiopia-born Sifan Hassan, finished third. Assefa dropped Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei as the race, played out in blazing sunshine and with thousands lining the route, entered its business end. She came home almost three minutes clear of the Kenyan. Hassan, who beat her in
