An own-goal by Tomas Hubocan consigned Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg to a cruel 3-2 defeat in their UEFA Champions League group match with AC Milan on Wednesday.
Zenit — who have been riven by internecine discord over the wages being paid to big-money signings Hulk and Axel Witsel, which led to Russia captain Igor Denisov being dropped — had done well to level the game after being 2-0 down early on.
Defeat, though, leaves them pointless in the group, while Milan’s win eases the pressure on Massimiliano Allegri after a disappointing start to the season in Serie A and it sees them move onto four points after two games.

“It’s a very important win for us,” Allegri said. “It was not easy to beat Zenit on their home turf. After we scored twice, we had to resist very serious pressure. Our goalkeeper played very well. I consider Zenit to be a club which is in the vanguard of European football, from any point of view.”
Milan hit the hosts with two goals in three minutes as first Urby Emanuelson’s free-kick took a huge deflection off Roman Shirokov and left Zenit goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev stranded, then Emanuelson was to go close seconds later as he ghosted in at the back post, but the Dutch international went with his preferred left leg when the right would have been the better option and it went the wrong side of the post.
However, the visitors doubled their lead in the next attack with a superb solo run by Stephan El Shaarawy, as the youngster, who turns 20 later this month, rode two tackles and beat a one-paced defense to slot the ball past Vyacheslav Malafeev for his fifth goal in four games.
Zenit rallied and but for several brilliant saves by Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati — especially from headers by Shirokov and Hulk — in the last 10 minutes of the half they could have gone in level at halftime.
Hulk had done his popularity with his teammates little good earlier in the half when he produced a storming run, but opted to shoot instead of looking up and seeing Alexander Kerzhakov, one of the players most upset with his and Axel Witsel’s huge wage packets, who was unmarked in the area.
However, he made up for that oversight as he got free on the left side of the area in stoppage-time in the first half and made no mistake, shooting into the far corner and giving Abbiati no chance.
The hosts maintained that momentum right from the start of the second half and they drew level in the 48th minute when Shirokov headed home from Hulk’s corner — Abbiati’s indecision as to whether to come for it or stay on his line proving fatal.
The hosts bad luck, though, continued. Having fought back to level terms they were undone by another deflection, this time it went down as an own-goal to Hubocan.
His knee connected with a tame effort by Giampaolo Pazzini and wrong-footed Malafeev to restore Milan’s lead and they held on to pile the misery on the Russian side.
“It’s a very sad evening for me,” Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti said. “This defeat ruined the work that we were doing for so long. Unfortunately, we lost this match. We started the match badly again. My players avoided responsibility and, like what happened in Malaga [in Zenit’s first match] we conceded two early goals. The Champions League is a completely different competition if compared with the Russian championship. You need to perform solidly throughout the match, and be more skillful and crafty, but we failed to tick those boxes.”
Omar Marmoush’s stunning long-range strike on Tuesday upstaged Kevin de Bruyne on the Manchester City great’s Etihad farewell. Marmoush let fly from about 30m to put City ahead in their 3-1 win against AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The victory moved Pep Guardiola’s team up to third in the standings and left qualification for the UEFA Champions League in their own hands heading into the last round of the season. “It’s really important. To be in the Champions League after what happened [this season] will be really nice,” the City manager said. De Bruyne was making his final home appearance for City before
TIGHT FINISH: Napoli only needed to do the same as or better than Inter, who won their game against Como 2-0 on the same day, leaving Napoli with a one-point lead The two players who Antonio Conte wanted more than any others secured Napoli their second Serie A title in three years on Friday. Scott McTominay scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick before halftime and Romelu Lukaku doubled the lead with a solo goal after the break in the decisive 2-0 home win over Cagliari. Conte became the first coach to win the Italian championship with three different teams. “Everyone contributed to this — but the coach most of all,” Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo said. “Napoli needed him to get back on top. He’s phenomenal.” Comparing it to his three Serie A titles won
The journey of Taiwan’s badminton mixed doubles duo Ye Hong-wei and Nicole Chan at the Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur came to an end in the semi-finals yesterday after they suffered a 2-0 loss to China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping. The Taiwanese shuttlers took on China’s second seeds in the mixed doubles event, but proved no match for Feng and Huang, losing the match 10-21, 7-21. SSC Napoli coach Antonio Conte has dragged the team back from disaster and restored them to the top of Italian Serie A, but his future at the Scudetto winners is in doubt even after a triumphant season. The fiery 55-year-old has exceeded preseason expectations and bolstered his reputation as a serial winner by guiding Napoli to their fourth Scudetto, and second in three seasons. However, he might well be on his way in the summer after just one season at the helm as his charged relationship with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has simmered throughout the campaign. Conte has said
