Japan’s Chisato Fukushima and Femi Seun Ogunode of Qatar won 200m titles yesterday to complete golden doubles at the Asian Games.
The 19-year-old Ogunode, who also clinched gold in the men’s 400m, clocked a personal best 20.43 seconds to win the 200 from Japan’s Kenji Fujimitsu.
Fukushima won the women’s 200m in 23.62 seconds, adding to her earlier gold in the 100m. Vietnam’s Vu Thi Huong, the bronze medalist in the 100m, trailed by 0.12 seconds. The 22-year-old Japanese had such a margin off the bend she could afford to slow down toward the end.
India swept the 400m hurdles gold medals, with Joseph Ganapathiplackal Abraham winning the men’s race in 49.96 seconds and Ashwini Chidananda Akkunji winning the women’s title in 56.15.
There was a flurry of activity on Day Five of the track and field competition, with 11 golds on offer.
Kicking off proceedings yesterday, China secured a 1-2 finish in the men’s 50km walk, with Si Tianfeng beating Li Lei.
South Korea’s Lee Yeon-kyung won a photo finish in the women’s 100m hurdles, edging Kazakhstan’s Natalya Ivoninskaya by a hundredth of a second. China’s Sun Yawei was third.
Kazakh Margarita Matsko and Iranian Sajad Moradi relied on late bursts to win the women’s and men’s 800m finals. Matsko set a personal best of 2:00.29 in the women’s race, while Moradi posted a games record of 1:45.45.
Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova showed her versatility by taking the women’s triple jump with a winning distance of 14.78m, marking the third Asiad athletics event in which she has landed a medal. She was also a silver medalist in the long jump and won gold in the women’s heptathlon in Doha four years ago.
Japan’s second gold of the night came when Yuki Ebihara won the women’s javelin while Dmitriy Karpov of Kazakhstan won the men’s decathlon with 8,026 points.
In the men’s basketball China’s Wang Shipeng hit a three point shot with 13 seconds left as the reigning Asian Games champions beat Iran 68-65 in a physical semi-final to set up with a gold medal game today against South Korea, who dispatched Japan 55-51.
In the women’s basketball Japan beat Taiwan 73-61 to claim the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Japan won their seventh straight match to clinch gold in the men’s soccer with a 1-0 over the United Arab Emirates.
Pakistan made up for the disappointment of its highly-favored team losing its semi-final in Twenty20 cricket to Afghanistan by picking up their first gold in men’s field hockey in 20 years, beating Malaysia 2-0.
