World champion Zhu Lin crashed out of the first round of the All-England Open championships, complaining of feeling too tired.
The seventh-seeded Chinese player was hardly in it after the first game of a 21-17, 21-11 defeat to her compatriot Jiang Yanjiao, in which she finished looking too lethargic to seriously contest the outcome. For a while, as she led 11-6 and 16-10, Zhu’s fine movement looked as though it might take her to a routine victory over a colleague still ranked outside the top 20.
But when that suddenly slowed, her ability to win points almost dried up altogether, and Jiang, finding clever angles with her left-handed attacks, took nine in a row.
That effectively sealed the first game, and from 6-6 in the second game Jiang took seven points in a row.
Her efforts in losing a long three-game final against Wang Yihan at the German Open in Mulheim only three days before may well have left her with insufficient time to recover.
World and Olympic champion Lin Dan breezed through the first round of the men’s tournament with a 21-13, 21-14 victory over dangerous Indian Anup Sridhar.
Former Olympic gold medalist Taufik Hidayat, All England titleholder Chen Jin and No. 1 seed Lee Chong Wei all, however, dropped sets on their way to round two.
Indonesia’s Taufik, seeded seventh, dropped a set against Taiwan’s Hsieh Yu-hsin but won 21-19, 15-21, 21-14.
Chen was also taken to three before ousting Japan’s Kenichi Tago 21-7 15-21 21-14.
World No.1 Lee lost the first set to China’s Lu Yi but eventually came through 19-21, 21-16, 21-11.

After letting another big lead slip with an error-strewn performance at the French Open on Wednesday, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka felt like getting as far away from the courts as possible. “Just want to quit tennis right now,” Sabalenka said after wasting a lead of a set and two breaks in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 loss to Diana Shnaider in the women’s singles quarter-finals. “We’ll see in few days. Hopefully I’ll get back on track mentally.” Sabalenka’s wait for a first French Open title continues despite the four-time major winner leading 4-1 in the second set and being two points from victory while

Liverpool are in advanced talks with former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola as they seek a replacement for Arne Slot, reports said on Tuesday. Iraola has emerged as Liverpool’s top target to replace Slot, who was sacked on Saturday last week after a turbulent second season in charge. Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal in principle to bring the Spaniard, who left Bournemouth at the end of this season, to Anfield. Sporting director Richard Hughes was heavily involved in hiring Iraola during his time at Bournemouth and is again spearheading the recruitment of the highly rated coach. The Reds are
US President Donald Trump said he would attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday at Madison Square Garden, but said he does not have much sympathy for ordinary basketball fans who cannot afford sky-high ticket prices to do the same. “They can watch it on television,” Trump said aboard Air Force One on Friday as he flew to Wisconsin for an event with farmers, after he was asked about tickets that have climbed as high as US$8,000 each when the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs square off in Manhattan for the first time in the series. “It’s sorta
