Wayne Rooney was ejected in the 64th minute on Wednesday in Villarreal's goalless draw with Manchester United in Group D of the Champions League.
England's fiery teenage striker received a second yellow card for his ironic applause of referee Kim Milton Nielsen's decision to caution him for a foul on Villarreal captain Quique Alvarez.
"He's a fiery character, and when he's thinking he's been done an injustice he reacts like that," United coach Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"It looked as if we were starting to control the match. We might have gone on to get a good result for ourselves. It certainly took away one of our best players," Ferguson said.
Rooney's dismissal was in front of England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was at the game at El Madrigal stadium. Eriksson criticized the 19-year-old's behavior publicly last week after England's shock World Cup 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland.
United's draw failed to improve its poor record in Spain, with only one win in 16 visits.

"We weren't too sharp up front. But a draw's not a bad result," Villarreal striker Diego Forlan told Canal Plus.
Villarreal, lacking injured Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme, played a waiting game in a quiet first half which contained only three chances on goal.
Villarreal goalkeeper Sebastian Viera parried a goalbound header by defender Mikael Silvestre in the 18th, while United 'keeper Edwin van der Sar dived to push away Rodolfo Arruabarrena's shot in the 36th.
United almost took the lead four minutes later when Villarreal central defender Gonzalo Rodriguez produced an overhead kick to clear Ruud van Nistelrooy's effort off the goal line.
The two-time European champions, already without injured captain Roy Keane and Gary Neville, lost Argentina left back Gabriel Heinze with a left knee injury in the 33rd following a collision with Villarreal right back Jan Kromkamp.
"We'll have to examine it tomorrow. It looks like he'll be out for a few weeks anyway," Ferguson said.
Forlan, who joined the club from United a year ago and scored 25 league goals last season, wasted his only chance in the 51st when he swept the ball wide following a counterattack.
The Spanish team, making its debut in the competition this season, pushed United toward the end. Substitute Roger Garcia went close with a long-range shot in the 85th, and Marcos Senna's drive was deflected onto the bar five minutes later.

Dennis Bergkamp scored an 89th-minute goal to give Arsenal a win over FC Thun on Wednesday in the Champions League, while Benfica and Ajax also benefited from late strikes.
Bergkamp scored his first Champions League goal in three years to help the Gunners to a 2-1 victory at Highbury.
Wesley Sneijder scored a last-minute equalizer to earn four-time champion Ajax a 1-1 draw at Sparta Prague, and Italian striker Fabrizio Miccoli netted an injury-time winner for Benfica in a 1-0 victory over Lille.
Also, Vincenzo Iaquinta scored a hat trick as Udinese marked its debut in the competition with a 3-0 victory over Panathinaikos, and Serie A champion Juventus won 2-1 at FC Brugge despite having Patrick Vieira sent off a minute from the end.
Other powerhouse teams started with victories. German champion Bayern Munich won 1-0 at Rapid Vienna and FC Barcelona topped host Werder Bremen 2-0.
At Highbury, Nelson Ferreira leveled for Thun two minutes after Gilberto Silva scored for Arsenal, which saw Robin van Persie sent off for a dangerously high kick in first-half injury time.
A 1-1 draw looked likely as the game went into the final minute but Bergkamp dug the ball out of a scramble and scored the winner.
"We created some chances in the first half and the sending-off made it difficult for us to get going," Bergkamp said. "But we did and we got a goal. They equalized but we kept fighting and there was a good spirit. Maybe in the end we would have been happy with a point, with it being 10 against 11."
With Sparta Prague and Ajax drawing, Bergkamp's goal put the Gunners at the top of Group B after the first round of games. Pavel Nedved and David Trezeguet scored within nine minutes of each other as Juventus won 2-1 at FC Brugge.
"The two yellows were very severe," said Vieira after his first expulsion in a Juve shirt. "What was important was the three points."
Peru striker Paolo Guerrero scored Bayern's winner in Vienna to leave the champions of Italy and Germany atop Group A.
Iaquinta, recently called into the Italian national squad, scored all three for Udinese against Panathinaikos, netting his first in the 28th and then adding two more in a three-minute spell in the second half.
The result put Udinese above Barcelona on goal difference, although goals by Deco and Ronaldinho gave the Spanish league champion a 2-0 triumph at Werder Bremen.
Miccoli's late strike for Benfica was the only goal in Group D, although he missed other chances in a 1-0 victory over Lille.
Rooney, whose temper flared during England's 1-0 loss to Northern Ireland a week ago, was sent off in the 64th for two yellow cards at Villarreal. The second was for ironic applause of referee Kim Milton Nielsen's decision to caution him for a foul moments after getting his first card.
Villarreal was weakened by the absence of injured Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme.
"We weren't too sharp up front. But a draw's not a bad result," said Villarreal striker Diego Forlan, who was playing against one of his former clubs.
The highlight result of Tuesday's games was Lyon's 3-0 victory over nine-time champion Real Madrid in Group F. Norway's Rosenborg won 3-1 at Olympiakos in the same group.
Defending champion Liverpool won 2-1 at Real Betis in Group G, while Chelsea beat Anderlecht 1-0. Also, it was: AC Milan 3, Fenerbahce 1 and PSV Eindhoven 1, Schalke 0 in Group E; Artmedia Bratislava 0, Inter Milan 1 and Rangers 3, FC Porto 2 in Group H.
Marta Kostyuk’s maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid came on Saturday thanks to her power, poise and a pair of unexpected lucky shorts. The world No. 23 beat eighth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in under 90 minutes to secure the most prestigious trophy of her career, her third professional singles title and second in less than a month after Rouen. Yet as the 23-year-old Ukrainian posed for photographs at the Caja Magica, it was not just the silverware that caught the eye. Held alongside her team and her two dogs, Kostyuk showed off a piece of black men’s underwear, prompting
Lin Yun-ju on Thursday handed Taiwan two key victories as they advanced to the semi-finals of the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in London. The Taiwan men’s table tennis team beat Sweden 3-2 in five singles matches. The 24-year-old Lin, Taiwan’s top-ranked player at world No. 7 and nicknamed the “Silent Assassin,” opened the tie by defeating world No. 2 Truls Moregard 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 13-11) before clinching the deciding fifth match with a 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 11-5) win over Anton Kallberg to hand his team the overall victory. Kuo Guan-hong put Taiwan up 2-0 with a 3-2 (4-11, 11-8, 8-11,
Throwing more than US$5 billion at a divisive new tour and walking away after five seasons does not look like good business, but LIV Golf was not all bad news for Saudi Arabia. Oil-funded LIV, which poached top stars and sent golf’s establishment into a tailspin, helped push the conservative kingdom into global view — one of its key aims, experts said. The exit, confirmed on Thursday after weeks of speculation, does not signal a flight of Saudi money from sport, even after the Middle East war that sparked Iranian attacks around the Gulf, they said. “Saudi Arabia is not
Arsenal stormed six points clear at the top of the English Premier League as Bukayo Saka and Viktor Gyokeres put Fulham to the sword in a 3-0 win, while West Ham United’s defeat at Brentford offered Tottenham Hotspur a lifeline in the battle for survival. The Gunners have stumbled toward the finish line in their quest for a first league title in 22 years, blowing a sizeable lead over Manchester City in a series of nervous displays. However, the return of Saka, making his first start in six weeks, freed up Mikel Arteta’s men in a dominant performance that shrugged
