Former Wimbledon and US Open champion John McEnroe has admitted unwittingly taking steroids for six years.
The 44-year-old who also won four US Open titles between 1979 and 1984 was reacting to Greg Rusedski's admission that he had tested positive for the banned steroid nandrolone.
"For six years I was unaware I was being given a form of steroid of the legal kind they used to give horses until they decided it was too strong even for horses," McEnroe told the Daily Mail.

He did not specify if it was the ATP Tour medical staff who administered the drugs.
Rusedksi has claimed that he should not have been charged because in the last 16 months 46 other players on the ATP Tour have been found to have had elevated nandrolone levels.
Last year the ATP dropped charges against seven of them after it was discovered the higher levels may have been caused by ATP trainers providing the players with the supplements in the form of tablets and drinks.
The other 39 were not charged because their nandrolone levels, while higher than usual, were below the legal limit.
"I'm not sure some of the strong, anti-inflammatory drugs are that far removed from illegal ones," McEnroe added.
"People have to become more aware of what they are putting into their bodies.

LeBron James is in quite the shooting slump — especially from long distance, highlighted by his zero-for-four effort from three-point range for the Los Angeles Lakers in their 109-80 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday. That return stretched the nearly-40-year-old’s skid to zero-for-19 from deep over his past four games. James’ birthday is on Dec. 30. After going four-for-16 from the floor overall with six of his team’s 20 turnovers for a season-low 10 points against the Timberwolves, James was asked to reflect on the Lakers reaching the quarter mark of their 2024-2025 schedule under rookie coach J.J. Redick at 12-9. “I
