A Taipei municipal police officer resigned his post Thursday after New Party City Councilor Lee Hsin (李新) accused him of colluding with the owner of the city's largest brothel.
But Chen Kuo-hao (
Lee had accused Chen of collusion with Taipei madam Chen Mei-ying (
Chen said the madam was using the city councilor to exact revenge on city police. "The city councilor was fooled and used by Mrs. Chen as a tool to take revenge on the police," the officer said.
Meanwhile, Chen's supervisor, Tatung precinct chief Lin Kun-huang (林昆煌), said that his subordinate had been an outstanding officer during his 14-year career and was likely set up by the sex industry.
According to Lee, many municipal police officers act in collusion with brothels.
When it came to Mrs. Chen's brothel, the madam would often call police to arrest her unpopular Chinese prostitutes in order to "replace the old ones with the new ones."
Later, the brothel and police would share a prostitute's earnings after she was sent back to China.
"Corrupt police are rewarded for making arrests not only by the city government, but also by the sex industry," the city councilor claimed. "Mrs. Chen, for example, usually paid them up to NT$150,000 for making each arrest."
As the scandal continued to grow yesterday, Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (
In addition, Ma said the city government would not replace any police precinct directors for the time being until new evidence is collected.
"The Taipei City Government will deal with [the abduction and extortion case] in compliance with the law, in a way no different from its handling of other cases," the mayor said.
Many women who sneak into Taiwan from China to work as prostitutes are often bullied due to their illegal status, Ma said.
The city government will launch a comprehensive investigation, not taking sides with any party, the mayor said.
Wang Cho-chun (王卓鈞), director of the Taipei Municipal Police Department, said yesterday that the directors of the Chungshan, Chungcheng and Ta-an police precincts on Tuesday asked to be transferred to other posts because of the scandal.
But the city government has refused to punish directors unless new evidence turns up.
DEFENDING DEMOCRACY: Taiwan shares the same values as those that fought in WWII, and nations must unite to halt the expansion of a new authoritarian bloc, Lai said The government yesterday held a commemoration ceremony for Victory in Europe (V-E) Day, joining the rest of the world for the first time to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. Taiwan honoring V-E Day signifies “our growing connections with the international community,” President William Lai (賴清德) said at a reception in Taipei on the 80th anniversary of V-E Day. One of the major lessons of World War II is that “authoritarianism and aggression lead only to slaughter, tragedy and greater inequality,” Lai said. Even more importantly, the war also taught people that “those who cherish peace cannot

The Philippines yesterday criticized a “high-risk” maneuver by a Chinese vessel near the disputed Scarborough Shoal (Huangyan Island, 黃岩島) in a rare incident involving warships from the two navies. The Scarborough Shoal — a triangular chain of reefs and rocks in the contested South China Sea — has been a flash point between the countries since China seized it from the Philippines in 2012. Taiwan also claims the shoal. Monday’s encounter took place approximately 11.8 nautical miles (22km) southeast” of the Scarborough Shoal, the Philippine military said, during ongoing US-Philippine military exercises that Beijing has criticized as destabilizing. “The Chinese frigate BN 554 was
US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer began talks with high-ranking Chinese officials in Switzerland yesterday aiming to de-escalate a dispute that threatens to cut off trade between the world’s two biggest economies and damage the global economy.
