With the presidential election just around the corner, reports of preparations for so-called "strategic voting" effects continue, several Chinese-language newspapers reported yesterday.
The most recent follows Tuesday's endorsement of Lien by Madame Chiang Kai-shek (蔣宋美齡).
Chiang's declaration, however, has triggered polarized responses in different parts of the country.
In Taipei, a "dump-save" sentiment has reportedly spread to mainlanders, as many believe independent presidential candidate James Soong (宋楚瑜) has a better chance than Lien to beat DPP candidate Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁).
On the other hand, reaction to the so-called "Lee Teng-hui path (李登輝路線)" continues to affect Taipei County, with "dump Lien to support Chen" heard among some residents, and "dump Lien to support Soong" being trumpeted by Soong supporters.
Chiang's endorsement of Lien has reportedly affected Soong's popularity among mainlanders in central Taiwan, while Chen reportedly enjoys high popularity in Tainan due to Lee Yuan-tseh's (李遠哲) declaration of support for Chen.
In response, the KMT has started running advertisements warning that voting for Soong is equal to voting for Chen and that a split KMT will give Chen a chance to take over.
