Interestingly, one of the words Collins Dictionary discarded was selected by Oxford University Press (OUP) for its own Word of the Year. On its Web site, the publishing house of the University of Oxford stated it had conducted a public poll in which over 37,000 people participated. The voters, along with OUP’s language experts, settled on the term “brain rot.” One main reason for the decision was the vast amount of interest in the noun during 2023 and 2024, with its usage increasing by 230 percent. In fact, brain rot is not a new term by any means. The first recorded use of the expression was by American writer Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden in 1854.

So, what exactly does brain rot mean? As OUP noted, Thoreau used the term to criticize society’s tendency to reject complex ideas in favor of simple explanations. In its more modern sense, brain rot refers to a mental or intellectual decline that results from overconsumption of online material that is trivial. The publisher explained that brain rot is used “to capture concerns about the impact of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially on social media.” Considering Thoreau’s criticism from the 1850s, it seems likely that he would have approved of brain rot’s new meaning in the Internet era.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed on Friday last week that the company is working with the Trump administration on a new computer chip designed for sale to China, it marked the latest chapter in a long-running debate over how the US should compete with China’s technological ambitions. The reasoning has sometimes changed — with US officials citing national security, human rights or purely economic competition — but the tool has been the same: export controls, or the threat of them. Nvidia believes it can eventually reap US$50 billion from artificial intelligence (AI) chip sales in China. But it so far has
