Whale sharks are the largest species of fish in the world. They aren’t related to whales, but take their name due to their enormous size. At full maturity, whale sharks measure around nine or 10 meters long and can weigh from 15,000 to 40,000 kilograms. Whale sharks live in warm waters, with about 75% of them found in the Indo-Pacific region. They can migrate thousands of kilometers to different feeding grounds, but at a slow speed of 5 km/h on average.
Whale sharks have a broad, flat head and are typically brown or gray in color. Their distinguishing characteristic lies in the markings on their backs, which feature dots inside squares that resemble a checkerboard. This pattern varies from one individual to another, making each of them distinct. Despite their massive size and fearsome appearance, these giant animals are actually quite docile. Divers can swim right next to them without real risk.
Interestingly, whale sharks have over 3,000 tiny teeth arranged in around 300 rows, although they neither bite nor chew their food. Unlike most other shark species, whale sharks are filter feeders, which means they feed by taking in large volumes of water. As they glide through the ocean, whale sharks suck in water along with plankton and, occasionally, small to medium-sized fish. Their gill rakers then trap these organisms, allowing the whale sharks to swallow them while water exits through their gills. This feeding method enables these giants to consume a great amount of food with minimal effort. Whale sharks may spend up to eight hours a day feeding, devouring over 20 kilograms of plankton and other small creatures.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed on Friday last week that the company is working with the Trump administration on a new computer chip designed for sale to China, it marked the latest chapter in a long-running debate over how the US should compete with China’s technological ambitions. The reasoning has sometimes changed — with US officials citing national security, human rights or purely economic competition — but the tool has been the same: export controls, or the threat of them. Nvidia believes it can eventually reap US$50 billion from artificial intelligence (AI) chip sales in China. But it so far has
In 2024, multiple airplane accidents caused severe casualties, including a Jeju Air disaster at the year’s end. However, not all incidents ended in tragedy. Early in the year, a Japan Airlines flight caught fire after landing in Tokyo, but all 379 passengers and crew members escaped within 90 seconds. This event highlights the “golden 90 seconds” that experts emphasize — most survivors evacuate the plane within this critical window. Proper preparation ensures you can act quickly and decisively during these crucial moments when every second counts. Your survival strategy begins before takeoff. Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang In many Western countries, the most common form of tally marks employs a five-bar gate structure: four vertical lines followed by a diagonal slash. To form this group, one begins by drawing four parallel vertical lines, each representing one. For the fifth, draw a diagonal line across the existing four. This diagonal stroke effectively creates a distinct group of five. To continue counting, just initiate a new cycle in the same manner. A set of five tallies combined with a single vertical line next to it represents the number six. Across many Asian countries, the Chinese character
