Botswana has gentle rolling hills, wetlands and plains. Tourists from all over the world come to see the antelope, big cats and hyenas.
Botswana's main exports are diamonds and beef, and the largest diamond mine in the world is in the country. However, the goverment has sought to decrease Botswana's dependence on so few exports and has worked to diversify the economy and encourage foreign investment.
Since Botswana's independence from Britain in 1965, the Botswana Democratic Party has been the winner of every election. The government has a reputation for being uncorrupt and having a cooperative foreign policy. Botswana is often called the least corrupt nation on the continent by NGOs.
The major challenge Botswana faces today is HIV. Nearly one in three people in Botswana are infected, and in the last 15 years the life expectancy has dropped from 64 to 34 years. To limit the damage from the epidemic, the government has started programs to provide free drugs and to prevent transmission of HIV from mother to child.
Traditional arts such as basket weaving, pottery, weaving and dye making are still prominent throughout the villages of Botswana. Hunting is a strong tradition among some tribes, and those hunts can involve chasing an animal for days until it is exhausted and can no longer run.
Beef and goat are the most popular meats in Botswana, while sorghum and maize are the main grains eaten.
