The nation’s tallest peak, Yushan (Jade Mountain, 玉山), has witnessed the first snow of this winter, the Central Weather Administration said yesterday.
The Yushan Weather Station, on the northern peak of the mountain, observed a brief snowfall between 3:05pm and 3:06pm, and again at 3:30pm, the agency reported.
It added that most of Taiwan experienced high moisture levels, despite the weakening of a cold air mass yesterday morning.

Those conditions caused mountains above 3,000m to ice up with rime covering vegetation.
The lowest temperature recorded in low-lying areas early yesterday morning was 9.8°C in New Taipei City’s Shiding District (石碇), followed by 10.8°C in Miaoli County’s Sanwan Township (三灣).
Lows of 11°C to 13°C were recorded in other areas.

Independent meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said the temperature would slowly rise today, but he predicted that it would still be cold in the northern parts of the nation.
He forecast that another cold air mass would arrive tomorrow, sending temperatures below 10°C.

The number of births in Taiwan fell to an all-time monthly low last month, while the population declined for the 16th consecutive month, Ministry of the Interior data released on Friday showed. The number of newborns totaled 8,684, which is 704 births fewer than in March and the lowest monthly figure on record, the ministry said.
