Scores of movie fans flocked to the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei last night to witness the most star-studded Golden Horse Awards Ceremony of all time, where several big-time movie stars from countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong and China arrived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the “Chinese-language Oscars.”
More than 100 directors, actors and actresses attended this year’s ceremony as nominees, award presenters or jurors, including two-time Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee (李安), famed Hong Kong director John Woo (吳宇森), Hong Kong celebrities Maggie Cheung (張曼玉), Andy Lau (劉德華) and Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) and last year’s Golden Horse best actor Sean Lau (劉青雲).
Lee, who appeared on the red carpet with Taiwanese actress and icon Brigitte Lin (林青霞), said he is “very proud” that the Golden Horse Awards has expanded from Taiwan to the entire Chinese-speaking world.

At press time, Chinese actor Li Xuejian (李雪健) won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Back to 1942 (一九四二), while Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann (楊雁雁) was crowned Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Ilo Ilo (爸媽不在家).
Taiwanese director Chi Po-lin (齊柏林) bagged the Best Documentary award for his film Beyond Beauty: Taiwan From Above (看見台灣), and Chinese/French film Butter Lamp (蘇油燈) won the award for the Best Short Film.
Taiwanese recording artist Tu Duu-chih (杜篤之) won a record 10th Golden Horse award when he and his partner Kuo Li-chi (郭禮杞) collected the Best Sound Effects award for their work in Soul (失魂).
Taiwanese singer and actress Kuo Shu-yau (郭書瑤) won the Best New Performer award for her performance in Step back to Glory (志氣).
Jackie Chan (成龍), He Jun (何鈞) and JC Stunt Team were given the Best Action Choreography award for their work in CZ12 (十二生肖).
Lin Xudong (林旭東) of China and Matthieu Laclau of France were presented with the Best Film Editing award for their work in A Touch of Sin (天注定).
Singaporean director Anthony Chen (陳哲藝) won the Best New Director award for his film Ilo Ilo.
Taiwanese actress Chen Chen (甄珍), 65, who has starred in more than 50 movies and won two Best Actress awards at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival during her three-decade-long movie career, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
