It's time to raise your hands in the air to countdown to 2008. From Taipei to Kaohsiung, here are the eight hottest New Year's bashes that Taiwan has to offer. Here it goes:
● Luxy: A sure bet if you like crowds, big and mixed. In the Onyx room, the "effect-tweaking master" James Zabiela (from the UK) is headlining. Ying Yang Twins (from the US) and Taiwanese rap group Da Mouth are performing in the hip-hop room. 5F, 201, Zhongxiao E Rd, Sec 4, Taipei City (台北市忠孝東路四段201號5F). Visit www.luxy-taipei.com.
● AgeHa: Been to the new AgeHa yet? We dig its rave atmosphere and the spectacular Las Vegas-style novelty performances imported from Japan. Takuya (from Tokyo, known for his tribal, jazzy, soulful and Afro house) and Taipei's newly beloved Kotoswitch will rock on NYE. B1, 171 Songde Rd, Taipei City (台北市松德路171號B1). ● The Last Minute: A presidential suite party hosted by Frog in a Sock Entertainment, which threw a Halloween party and summer pool parties at the same venue (Sunworld Dynasty Hotel, Taipei). There are two rooms this time: house and hip-hop. Featuring DJs SL, Saucey, Yoshi, Cap and D. Soto, as well as a stellar view of Taipei 101. 100 Dunhua N Rd, Taipei City (台北市敦化北路100號). For a list of ticket outlets, view the party flyer at www.taiwannights.com.
● Hen House: First of all, the organizers deserve props for getting rid of the last "head-shaking" club in Chungli City (中壢市). This stylish new joint boasts a solid sound system and attracts hipsters and music fans from around town. Woo-Fan and his crew will be mixing up hip-hop, reggae and rare grooves. B1, 12, Chungmei Rd Sec 1, Chungli City (中壢市中美路一段12號B1). Visit henhouse2007.blogspot.com or call 0916 762 977.
● Trio: Hip-hop is not your cup of tea? Clubbing is not your type of scene? This friendly little bar in downtown Taoyuan is perfect for a few drinks and maybe a bit of boogie-woogie. Manning the ones and twos are veterans Al and Fion. And best of all, there's no cover charge. 70, Mingsheng Rd, Taoyuan City (桃園市70民生路).
● Liquid Lounge: The venue may not have all the club amenities but it's where the expats in Taichung will most likely end up going, and they sure know how to party. The Swank DJ crew is hosting the bash, which means "house music all night long." 98, Chungming S Rd, Taichung City (台中市中明南路98號). Visit www.swank-dj.com.
● Roof Park: This rooftop lounge club has been our top choice for nightlife in Kaohsiung, not only because of its incomparable view of the city, but also for its top-notch sound system. Will, Stan, Nina, and Mango will be dropping beats as 2008 arrives. 15F, 165, Linsen 1st Rd, Kaohsiung City (高雄市林森一路165號15樓). Visit www.roof-lounge.com.
● PP (Private Party): Don't let the name fool you; this event is definitely public. PP boasts two rooms and the night will feature Rob Solo, Nina, Glenn, Luke & Phil and Naked. It's a foreigner-oriented party and looks set to be a night of mayhem. B1, 10 Szuwei 4th Rd, Kaohsiung (高雄市四維四路10號B1). Visit www.privateparty.tw.
Following the shock complete failure of all the recall votes against Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers on July 26, pan-blue supporters and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) were giddy with victory. A notable exception was KMT Chairman Eric Chu (朱立倫), who knew better. At a press conference on July 29, he bowed deeply in gratitude to the voters and said the recalls were “not about which party won or lost, but were a great victory for the Taiwanese voters.” The entire recall process was a disaster for both the KMT and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The only bright spot for
Aug. 11 to Aug. 17 Those who never heard of architect Hsiu Tse-lan (修澤蘭) must have seen her work — on the reverse of the NT$100 bill is the Yangmingshan Zhongshan Hall (陽明山中山樓). Then-president Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) reportedly hand-picked her for the job and gave her just 13 months to complete it in time for the centennial of Republic of China founder Sun Yat-sen’s birth on Nov. 12, 1966. Another landmark project is Garden City (花園新城) in New Taipei City’s Sindian District (新店) — Taiwan’s first mountainside planned community, which Hsiu initiated in 1968. She was involved in every stage, from selecting
As last month dawned, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was in a good position. The recall campaigns had strong momentum, polling showed many Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) lawmakers at risk of recall and even the KMT was bracing for losing seats while facing a tsunami of voter fraud investigations. Polling pointed to some of the recalls being a lock for victory. Though in most districts the majority was against recalling their lawmaker, among voters “definitely” planning to vote, there were double-digit margins in favor of recall in at least five districts, with three districts near or above 20 percent in
The great number of islands that make up the Penghu archipelago make it a fascinating place to come back and explore again and again. On your next trip to Penghu, why not get off the beaten path and explore a lesser-traveled outlying island? Jibei Island (吉貝嶼) in Baisha Township (白沙鄉) is a popular destination for its long white sand beach and water activities. However, three other permanently inhabited islands in the township put a unique spin on the traditional Penghu charm, making them great destinations for the curious tourist: Yuanbeiyu (員貝嶼), Niaoyu (鳥嶼) and Dacangyu (大倉嶼). YUANBEIYU Citou Wharf (岐頭碼頭) connects the mainland
