Pegatron Corp yesterday said it plans to invest NT$700 million (US$22.86 million) over the next three years in its new research and development (R&D) base in Kaohsiung’s Asia New Bay Area (亞洲新灣區), which officially opened yesterday.
The base would comprise four major facilities: the Southern Research and Development Center, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computing Center, the Smart Manufacturing Co-creation Center and the Training and Results Exhibition Center, Pegatron said.
The base can provide corporations with a one-stop service environment covering product development, testing and verification phases, Pegatron chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) said on the sidelines of an opening ceremony.

However, it would mainly be used for fine-tuning at the manufacturing end and the implementation of smart manufacturing techniques, rather than large-scale product development, he said.
The company’s R&D team in Kaohsiung has about 200 people, and is likely to expand, he added.
Pegatron’s R&D base in Taipei is mainly responsible for developing core technologies, while the Kaohsiung facility would focus on meeting customers’ needs and providing technical support, Tung said.
The company also expects the Kaohsiung base to support its deployment in Southeast Asian markets, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, he said.
The base is equipped with 5G O-RAN structures, enabling quick deployment and adjustments for a digital communication environment, Tung said.
The base’s AI computing center would focus on researching how AI models can be applied in smart manufacturing and integrated with actual production lines to strengthen its automation capabilities, he added.
For example, the company uses robotic arms to produce some of its server models and has demonstrated automatic wire-insertion robotic arms to several clients, receiving positive feedback, Pegatron said.
The technology is to be verified in Taiwan before being deployed at its plant in Texas, the company said.
However, Pegatron is not planning to invest resources in developing large-scale AI models, but would focus on applying inference and edge technologies, the company said.
It would also cooperate with firms such as Nvidia Corp, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Intel Corp to integrate hardware design, it said.

BREAKTHROUGH TECH: Powertech expects its fan-out PLP system to become mainstream, saying it can offer three-times greater production throughput Chip packaging service provider Powertech Technology Inc (力成科技) plans to more than double its capital expenditures next year to more than NT$40 billion (US$1.31 billion) as demand for its new panel-level packaging (PLP) technology, primarily used in chips for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, has greatly exceeded what it can supply. A significant portion of the budget, about US$1 billion, would be earmarked for fan-out PLP technology, Powertech told investors yesterday. Its heavy investment in fan-out PLP technology over the past 10 years is expected to bear fruit in 2027 after the technology enters volume production, it said, adding that the tech would
