China’s Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corp launched three new smartphones in Taiwan yesterday as part of its strategy to increase its sales volume at a relatively moderate pace to contribute to its long-term growth.
Heaven He (何濤安), general manager of Oppo’s Taiwan branch, said the company has been ranked among the nation’s top 10 smartphone brands by sales volume since it made its local debut in June last year.
Oppo, which entered the mobile phone business in 2008, is hoping to become one of the top five smartphone vendors in the nation by the end of the year, He said at the launch of the premium R7 series and the mid-range Mirror 5s phones.
He declined to give specific sales targets for Oppo’s new smartphones, saying only that the company would seek “healthy, long-term” growth by carefully controlling inventories rather than aggressively pushing shipments.
He said that Oppo plans to open two exclusive stores in Taipei and Kaohsiung later this month and expand the total to seven or eight be the end of this year.
The R7 smartphone has a 5-inch 1080p HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 1.5GHz 64-bit processor, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, a 2,320mAh battery and a fast charging feature that provides two hours of talk time from just five minutes of charging.
The R7 Plus has a larger 6-inch 1080p HD screen and a bigger battery capacity of 4,100mAh, while the Mirror 5s comes with a 5-inch 720p HD display and other stripped-down hardware specifications.
The R7 starts from NT$10,990 and the R7 Plus starts at NT$15,990. The lower-end Mirror 5s carries a price tag of NT$6,990.
According to earlier media reports, Oppo has set its sights on shipping 50 million smartphones this year, of which 35 million would go to more than 20 overseas markets.
