Philips starts ad campaign
Royal Philips Electronics NV, Europe's largest consumer-electronics maker, will start a three-year campaign on Jan. 1 to boost recognition of its brand in the US, the company said in its internal magazine Mondial. "Philips is a weak brand in the US," the Oct. 20 edition of the magazine cited Terry Fassburg, vice president brand communications in the US, as saying. "People have either never heard of us or don't know what we do."

TCL, Thomson join efforts
China's TCL and rival Thomson of France agreed yesterday to form the world's largest TV maker in a venture that will produce 18 million television sets a year, the companies said yesterday. The two companies will combine their television and DVD businesses and assets to form the new company -- TCL-Thomson Electronics, they said in separate statements received here. "The two groups have decided to join together their respective strengths in the TV industry," TCL said in a statement.
