Former Academia Sinica president Lee Yuan-tseh (李遠哲) is to be honored with the Chemical Heritage Foundation's 11th Othmer Gold Medal, the nation's top research institute said yesterday.

The 1986 Nobel laureate will receive the prestigious award at a presentation ceremony to be held at the foundation's headquarters in Philadelphia on May 15.

    OUTSTANDING

The Othmer Gold Medal is presented to outstanding individuals who have made multifaceted contributions to humankind's chemical and scientific heritage through accomplishments in areas such as innovation, entrepreneurship, research, public understanding, education, legislation or philanthropy.

The medal, awarded annually since 1997, is cosponsored by the foundation and four affiliated organizations: the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Chemists' Club and the Societe de Chimie Industrielle (American Section).

In a press statement announcing the awarding of the medal to Lee, foundation president and CEO Thomas Tritton lauded the Nobel laureate for his dedication to and accomplishments in the fields of education and scientific research.
