Security forces killed at least 25 suspected Islamic militants in battles sparked by a deadly attack on a police station in northern Nigeria, an army spokesman said.
The fighting on Wednesday came as a government spokesman rejected opposition demands to delay today's presidential vote. The lead-up to the vote has been marked by violence and fraud allegations.
Security forces had earlier pushed the suspected militants out of a stronghold they had established in the northern city of Kano after the police station attack on Tuesday, officials said.
Army spokesman Colonel Ayo Olaniyan said 25 of the fighters were killed in the battle. He called them self-styled "Taliban" militants who had crossed into Nigeria from Chad.
The fighting appeared to stem from a dispute among rival Islamic factions in northern Nigeria, which shares a long, largely unprotected border with Chad.
