A group of New Zealand motorists have found a way to save money on their compulsory car registration by declaring their vehicles to be non-commercial hearses.
They justified the claim by saying they carry dead chickens home from the supermarket, the Newstalk ZB radio network reported yesterday.
A Christchurch woman said she gave this explanation to the man behind the counter in the post office who approved it and gave her a registration sticker that cost NZ$200 (US$124) less than the standard charge for an ordinary car.
"He told her there were a lot of non-commercial hearses driving around the affluent Christchurch suburb of Merivale," the network reported.
A spokesman for Land Transport New Zealand, which is responsible for motor-vehicle licensing, said those drivers were breaking the law and, if the scam proved to be widespread, police would be called in.
