The leaders of the US and Poland yesterday urged "responsible states" to join forces and halt the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) at a meeting of the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI).
"The PSI is dedicated to stopping all aspects of the proliferation trade, and denying terrorists, rogue states and their supplier networks access to WMD-related materials and delivery systems," US President George W. Bush said in a statement read out by the head of the US delegation at the talks, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control Bob Joseph.
The PSI, launched by Bush during a visit to Poland in 2003, aims to increase international cooperation in halting shipments of WMD and to prevent such weapons falling into the hands of "terrorist groups and states suspected of supporting them."
Delegations from nearly 70 countries, including several new PSI members from the Gulf region and central Asia, were meeting in Warsaw yesterday.
