Most Britons want troops to withdraw

    DPA, LONDON
    Tuesday, Apr 04, 2006, Page 7

For the first time since the overthrow of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein three years ago, a substantial majority of Britons want troops to be withdrawn, either immediately or within 12 months, a poll published in the Daily Telegraph yesterday showed.

The "YouGov" survey showed opposition to the war at its highest level since the US-led coalition invaded Iraq in March 2003, the newspaper said.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents believed that US President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair were "wrong" to take military action. Only a third still believed they were right.

When the invasion was launched in March, 2003, 60 percent of respondents said that military action was right and 35 percent opposed it.

The new poll showed that a withdrawal of troops is supported, "regardless of the situation on the ground" in Iraq.

The UK has around 8,000 soldiers stationed in southern Iraq.
