There was no holiday for US President George W. Bush and Senator John F. Kerry, his presumptive opponent in the November 2 election. Bush spoke on the steps of the West Virginia State Capitol, while Kerry took part in Fourth of July celebrations in Independence, Iowa.
Some US soldiers also had no holiday. Several of them were at the Atlanta airport at the end of their two-week visits home. CNN showed uniformed soldiers at Atlanta's airport preparing to board flight to return to their duty stations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
