Taiwanese have the right to be themselves: Tsai

Staff writer, with CNA

President-elect Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) yesterday responded to a flood of Facebook messages about her legislative reform proposals, saying that Taiwan is a great nation where everyone has the right to be themselves.

Tsai on Wednesday posted a proposal ensure the impartiality of the new legislative speaker. More than 40,000 comments have been posted in response, as Chinese and Taiwanese netizens traded barbs over Taiwan’s sovereign status.

Tsai yesterday followed up with a photograph of crowd members at an election rally, showing one person holding a Republic of China flag, another wearing a campaign headband of the Taiwan Solidarity Union and holding a campaign flag of the New Power Party, and a third person carrying a campaign flag of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

“The greatness of this nation lies in the fact that everyone has the right to be themselves,” Tsai wrote.

DPP spokesman Yang Chia-liang (楊家俍) also commented on the page, saying “welcome to a democratic and free Taiwan.”

It is not the first time that Tsai’s Facebook page has been bombarded with comments from Chinese users. In November last year tens of thousands of comments were left on her page criticizing her and the DPP.

At the time, Tsai said she viewed the flood of messages “in a positive way” and hoped Chinese netizens would also be able to visit the Facebook pages of other Taiwanese and groups.
