Freeway No. 5 traffic lights here to stay

Staff writer, with CNA

Traffic lights set up at the mid-point of the freeway between Taipei and Yilan are here to stay, the National Freeway Bureau says.

The traffic lights at the 30.5km mark on the northbound lanes of Freeway No. 5 were introduced last month as part of a scheme to give priority to buses during periods of traffic congestion and to encourage the use of public transportation, the bureau said.

The scheme allows buses to use the hard shoulder of the freeway before the exit to Yilan’s Toucheng Township (頭城) and then return to the main lanes when other vehicles are stopped at the traffic lights.

The bureau said the scheme has helped cut the travel time of buses between the Yilan interchange at the 38km mark and the Toucheng interchange by about 14 to 15 minutes.

Following the successful trial, the bureau said the traffic control scheme would be adopted when needed on Sundays and during national holidays.
