Two soldiers die after vehicle falls into Kinmen lake

Staff writer, with CNA

Two soldiers were confirmed dead after their CM-21 armored fighting vehicle crashed into a lake in Kinmen County on Saturday afternoon as they headed back to their base following combat training.

The soldiers, surnamed Wang (王), 22, and Huang (黃), 26, were rushed to Kinmen Hospital after they were pulled from the lake, but were later pronounced dead, the hospital said.

Major General Wu Li-wen (武立文), a spokesman for the Kinmen Defense Command, said that the incident resulted from their vehicle colliding with a tree on a street for “unknown reasons” and then falling into Lake Tai (太湖), the island’s largest artificial freshwater lake.

The vehicle was one of four CM-21s that participated in the combat training, Wu said.

“We will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident,” Wu said, rejecting rumors that the vehicle crashed due to a mechanical failure.

The vehicle was unarmed at the time of the accident.
