Tropical storms Goni and Atsani formed early yesterday off Guam and a strengthening Goni could affect Taiwan next week, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.

On their current paths, Goni could head toward the west of Taiwan, while Atsani could head north on Wednesday, bureau forecasts showed.

Goni could continue to strengthen and develop into a typhoon under current conditions forecasters said.

Goni’s outer rim could bring rain to the nation on Friday, but whether the storm would directly affect Taiwan is likely to be clearer on Tuesday, the bureau said.

As of 2am yesterday, Goni was centered 3,050km east-southeast of Hualien, moving at a speed of 9km per hour in a northwesterly direction, the bureau said, adding its maximum sustained winds were 65kph, with gusts reaching 90kph.

Atsani was centered 4,300km east-southeast of Taipei, showing little movement to the west-northwest, the bureau said, adding that it also had maximum sustained winds of 65kph, with gusts reaching 90kph.
