Former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁), who has been on medical parole since early January, is to have his parole extended for a further three months, the Ministry of Justice said yesterday.
Chen, who is serving a 20-year sentence for corruption, is to be allowed to continue to receive medical treatment outside prison after his parole expires today, the ministry’s Agency of Corrections said.
Taichung Prison has sent officials to visit Chen regularly since his release from the prison on Jan. 5, and prison officials visited Chen at his residence in Kaohsiung on Monday last week.
The prison, based on his treatment and medical records, sent a report to the agency for it to rule on whether to grant a further parole extension.
The agency said that it granted the request on the grounds that Chen cannot get proper medical treatment in prison and that the complications of his illnesses are difficult to control, putting him at risk of sudden death.
Yesterday’s extension was Chen’s third. He received a second three-month extension in May to continue receiving treatment for a variety of ailments outside of prison.

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Yilan County at 8:39pm tonight, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Taiwan Railways Corp (TRC) today announced that Shin Kong Mitsukoshi has been selected as the preferred bidder to operate the Taipei Railway Station shopping mall, replacing the current operator, Breeze Development Co Ltd.
