Application period for Taipei public housing units opens

By Abraham Gerber  /  Staff reporter

Applications for a first wave of new public housing units are to be accepted by the Taipei City Government today.

The online applications are for 570 units next to Longshan Temple, Gangqian, Taipei Bridge and Xindian MRT stations.

Comprising the city government’s share of joint development projects, the apartments have been billed as the first of 50,000 affordable public housing units which Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) has pledged will be released onto the market over the next eight years.

Monthly rents range from NT$8,400 to NT$29,800 and are a 15 percent discount on market rates based on a unit’s size and location, with the city government pledging a further 15 percent discount after the first year for well-behaved tenants.

With a proposed bill to establish a city rental corporation awaiting submission to the Taipei City Council for approval, management of the housing released today is to be outsourced to private firms, Taipei Department of Urban Development official Tsai Jui-ting (蔡瑞艇) said.

Meanwhile, Taipei Bridge joint development housing governance committee chairwoman Chen Pi-yao (陳碧瑤) said that the city had yet to engage with the current homeowners in the developments who fear that prices for their units could drop if the surrounding units become public housing.
