Bern asked to help return Lafayette kickbacks in banks

The government has asked Switzerland to help return NT$10.4 billion (US$330.44 million) frozen in Swiss bank accounts that was obtained as illegal kickbacks in the 1991 procurement of Lafayette-class frigates from France, prosecutors said on Saturday.

The request is based on a verdict issued by the Supreme Court in April, in which former navy captain Kuo Li-heng (郭力恆) was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined NT$200 million for accepting bribes connected to the frigate deal. The verdict established that Kuo and fugitive arms broker Andrew Wang (汪傳浦) took kickbacks in the deal and that they were the principal offenders in the case.

The document has been translated into French and submitted to Switzerland’s Federal Department of Justice and Police, the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office’s Special Investigation Division said.
