The ability to deal with aggressive dogs and traffic accidents are among the qualities sought by Chunghwa Post Co during the recruitment of postal workers, according to a brochure from the state-run mail company.

A mail carrier needs to be physically strong, be capable of working in all kinds of weather, and have the ability to deal with incidents such as traffic accidents and dog attacks, Chunghwa Post said in a brochure giving details about its job openings, requirements and preferred qualities for each position.

There have been a number of cases of the nation’s postal workers being chased or attacked by dogs while on duty. As a result, Chunghwa Post said it provides training for its newly recruited delivery workers on how to prevent or tackle dog attacks, which includes advising them against throwing anything at a barking or chasing dog.

This year the postal company is advertising 1,405 job vacancies, about a third of which are postal delivery positions, it said.

The first round of the selection process involves a written examination, which was held on Saturday in Taipei, Greater Taichung and Greater Kaohsiung. The results of the exam are to be announced on July 16.

Those who pass the exam can participate in the second round of the selection process, which involve spoken and physical tests, and is scheduled to be held in late July.

According to Chunghwa Post, candidates for mail delivery jobs will be required to take part in a physical test, in which they have to walk a distance of 5m carrying a postal bag weighing 30kg. Candidates must complete at least four such walks within a minute to pass the exam.
