Former vice president Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) said yesterday that he hopes to help create new opportunities for Taiwan’s business community during the upcoming Boao Forum for Asia.

Siew, attending the economic forum between today and Monday in Hainan, China, in his capacity as the honorary chairman of the Taipei-based Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, said before departing that the conference had become an important platform for trade and economic exchange across the Taiwan Strait.

The theme for this year’s forum, which is one of the largest annual economic meetings in Asia, is “Asia Seeking Development for All: Restructuring, Responsibility and Cooperation.”

Several members of the Taiwanese delegation accompanying him are from the business world, Siew said, and he hopes to help them generate new opportunities and share their experiences.

Sources previously said that Siew was scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) on Monday, but the former vice president said at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport before leaving that the time and place of the meeting have yet to be finalized.

The meeting is to be Xi’s first with a leading Taiwanese politician since he became China’s president earlier this month and is expected to set the tone for future cross-strait relations.
