Menendez has spoken to the US Department of State about the contract and appears to have lobbied for it. In addition, Melgen has made large financial donations to Menendez’s re-election campaigns.
“Dr Melgen has been a friend and political supporter of Senator Menendez for many years,” the senator’s office said.
A senatorial aide added that there was nothing improper in Menendez advocating for Melgen’s business interests.
