Remarks by Taiwanese singer-songwriter Harlem Yu (庾澄慶) during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Taipei has landed him in trouble, with critics accusing him of discriminating against homosexuals.

When introducing the song Only for You (只有為你), Yu, addressing the crowd of revelers at the New Year’s countdown celebration party in front of Taipei City Hall, said: “Who among you came here tonight as a couple? I want to dedicate this song to you. I want to see couples as a man and a woman, not two men or two women, or others…”

Yu was later called ignorant by Gigi Chao (趙式芝), daughter of a Hong Kong tycoon and a celebrity who came out as a lesbian by marrying a woman last year.

Chao, in response to a media query about Yu’s remarks, dismissed them as rubbish.

Yu’s comments drew mixed reactions from netizens, with some chastising him, while others said his remarks had been misconstrued.

When asked for a response, Yu’s agent said: “He really didn’t mean to discriminate against homosexuals.”
