Weather bureau keeping an eye on new tropical storm

Tropical Storm Prapiroon formed on Sunday night, but whether it will affect the nation’s weather remains to be seen, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

At press time, the center of the storm was 1,130km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻). It was moving southwest at 11kph, with a radius of 150km.

The bureau said the storm, whose name refers to a Thai rain god, was not likely to affect the nation’s weather in the next five days. Its path would be clearer on Thursday or Friday, the bureau said.

However, Taiwan would still be under the influence of the northeast monsoon this week. Cloudy skies are forecast for the eastern and northern regions, which are on the windward side of the monsoon. Chances of showers are high in the mountainous areas in central and southern parts of the country.

Temperatures of between 26°C and 29°C are expected for northern and eastern regions and 31°C in central and southern regions. People are advised to carry a light jacket, as the difference between daytime and nighttime may be significant.
