About 100 young people are expected to attend a 1,000km around-the-nation bike tour this year as part of the Biking of Age event, which has been held annually by the Sports Affairs Council since 2009.

The event serves as an alternative way to celebrate the transition into adulthood, the council said, adding that to qualify for the tour, participants must be between 18 and 20 years old.

Aside from the 10-day bike tour, the event also offers five-day, 500km regional tours in the nation’s northern, southern, central and eastern areas.

The council said courage and determination are crucial qualities for completing the 10-day bike tour.

Among this year’s participants are two visually impaired people who have said they want to cycle around the nation while they still have some eyesight left.

Third-time participant Yang Huang-liang (楊皇亮) said he was unable to finish the 2009 and 2010 bike tours because of typhoons and was determined to finish the tour this year.

Wang Hsin-yi (王馨誼), a 20-year-old student, said she has been wanting to travel around the country. She wants to go on the bike tour with her 18-year-old brother, who had just finished his college entrance exam.

The regional bike tours will begin in New Taipei City (新北市), Changhua County, Greater Kaohsiung and Hualien County on July 16, July 23, July 26 and July 25 respectively. The 1,000km bike tour will begin on August 19 in New Taipei City.

The deadline for registration is Friday. Details are available on the event’s official Web site at http://bike101.tw/#/main.
