The Ministry of National Defense (MND) yesterday said a combat pilot surnamed Hsiao (蕭) has been disciplined and taken off flight duty after it was discovered that he was dating a Chinese reporter stationed in Taiwan.
The ministry said in a press statement that Hsiao became acquainted with the Chinese woman, surnamed Li (李), in February.
The military’s counter intelligence unit quickly discovered their relationship and launched an investigation.
Although Hsiao was not found to have leaked any military information to Li, his behavior had still violated military regulations, the ministry said.
The ministry said personnel have to be alert, as China has used various ways to collect information about Taiwanese military secrets.
The Chinese-language Next Magazine reported yesterday that Li was a reporter for China National Radio in Taiwan.
Seven days after arriving in Taiwan in February, Li covered a bus accident in Hualien County in which some Chinese tourists were injured.
She became acquainted with Hsiao as she was returning to Taipei by train, the report said.
It said Hsiao, who was on the same train, took care of Li’s luggage and helped her change seats.
The magazine said the pair then started dating and that although Li immediately said she was a reporter for Chinese media, Hsiao did not tell her he was a military officer.
The report said that although Li had returned to China, the pair remained close and were constantly in touch.
