Visitors to Greater Kaohsiung over the New Year holiday season will be greeted by colorful flower beds covering up to 125 hectares, the city government said yesterday.
A flower and floral landscape and design competition will also take place at 15 areas around the city, including the Central Park and Aozihdi Forest Park.
Visitors can easily get to the flower beds in dozens of districts using public transport.
Four tours are also highly recommended: the short ferry ride from Sizihwan Pier (西子灣碼頭) to Cijin (旗津); a trip to Fo Guang Shan Monestary and E-DA World; experiencing the culture and cuisine of military dependents’ villages in Gangshan (岡山) and Zuoying (左營), and a tour of Cishan (旗山), Meinong (美濃), Neimen (內門) and Tianliao’s (田寮) Moon World.
The festivities will continue through the Lunar New Year, featuring several festivals.
The biennial Kaohsiung International Container Arts Festival at the Pier 2 Art Center features artists’ depictions of homes this year. The exhibition runs through Jan. 31.
This year, special holiday sales will be held in three shopping areas: the old street in Cishan District, Gangshan’s famous Shou Tian Temple and the Hanshin Arena department store.
Greater Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊) will launch the event on Jan. 7 and give out red envelopes to shoppers.
The Kaohsiung Lantern Festival will mark the end of the Year of the Dragon celebration from Jan. 27 to Feb. 6.
In addition to lanterns featuring dragons, water lanterns will be floated on the city’s Love River (愛河).
For easily accessible travel information, the Greater Kaohsiung City Government has unveiled a new travel Web site and a software application for smartphones is also available.
