Food vendors at six traditional markets will be offering weekend discounts this month as part of the fourth annual Taipei City Traditional Market Festival, which starts tomorrow.
A total of 46 booths at Yongchun Market, Andong Market, Huashan Market, Shidong Market, Shuiyuan Market and Xining Market will offer free samples and discounts of up to 35 percent every weekend until March 27.
Ting Ruo-ting (丁若亭), director of the city’s Market Administration Office, said popular booths that sell cooked food and other dishes at local markets would be featured during the festival, which aims to revitalize business at traditional markets.
The public is encouraged to go to the festival’s Web site (www.2011market.com.tw) to vote for their favorite booth. The city will present the award to the most popular booth at a ceremony on March 27 at Taipei Hope Plaza.
Ting said the city would also use this year’s festival to promote rice products, in line with the central government’s efforts to encourage rice consumption.
On March 26, the public can take a taste of various rice products and dishes — including rice dumplings and rice cakes — presented by different booths and vote for their favorite dish at Hope Plaza.
Ting said traditional markets citywide have been renovated over the years to modernize their facilities, improve the shopping environment and revitalize business.
