Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Greater Taichung mayoral candidate Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全) yesterday appealed to Taichung voters with a new campaign ad centered on the theme of change.
“Taichung has to make a change on Nov. 27,” Su’s spokesman Tsai Chi-chung (蔡其昌) said.
“The change is to bring progress and glory to Taichung,” added Tsai, who has accused Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taichung Mayor Jason Hu (胡志強), who is seeking re-election, of accomplishing little during his nine years in office.
According to Tsai, Su’s team will today hold a campaign event for which a turn-out of about 10,000 people is expected. The crowd will line-up to form the word “change” to draw attention to Su’s campaign pledge.
Meanwhile, at a separate setting yesterday, Hu, who suffered a minor stroke eight years ago that slightly hindered the movement in his left leg, said: “Many people made an issue of my health during the campaign, but as the campaign enters into its last week, the more I fight, the more vigorous I feel.”
He has dubbed the city’s booming culture and competitiveness “The Taichung Phenomenon,” saying that Taichung residents’ behavior, temperament and thinking has been changed by the culture-friendly environment.

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said.
