The Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) yesterday urged the public to check for recalled faulty dehumidifiers to avoid accidental fires.
Defective dehumidifiers caused at least 83 house fires and explosions in the past 21 months, fire department statistics show.
However, despite the danger of using the defective devices at home, the bureau estimates that as of the end of last month, only about 41.6 percent of recalled dehumidifiers, or about 120,000 dehumidifiers, had actually been returned.
In order to prevent future fires caused by defective dehumidifiers, the bureau yesterday called a joint press conference with the manufacturers of household appliances and retailers.
The bureau also plans advertising campaigns such as in-store posters to inform the public of the recalls to urge people to check whether their dehumidifiers are among the models being recalled.
The model numbers of the recalled products and manufacturers’ service hotlines are available on the bureau’s Web site at www.bsmi.gov.tw.
