Police were yesterday investigating an Internet post that called for the assassination of President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) two daughters.
Ma’s daughters, Lesley Ma (馬唯中) and Kelly Ma (馬元中), both reside in the US.
The threatening post first appeared on a Yahoo discussion board for stock tips on Wednesday that called on Taiwanese residing in the US to murder Ma’s daughters, adding that “[Lesley and Kelly] think they are safe hiding in the US?”
The entry was removed two hours later after complaints were made by other board users, police said.
Authorities said that security for Lesley and Kelly Ma would be increased for the duration of the investigation.
Presidential Office Spokesman Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) yesterday said the security unit would pay special attention to ensure the safety of the president’s two daughters.
Lawmakers across party lines yesterday deplored the post, with Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Shuai Hua-ming (帥化民) lashing out at the person who posted the entry.
Shuai described the person as “shameful” and “worse than the little gangsters portrayed in the [Taiwanese gangster movie] Monga [艋舺]” because the perpetrator did not identify himself or herself in the article.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯) said that while Taiwan is an open and democratic society, “any threats against human life will be rejected,” adding that the person was likely a political fanatic.

More than half of the bamboo vipers captured in Tainan in the past few years were found in the city’s Sinhua District (新化), while other districts had smaller catches or none at all. Every year, Tainan captures about 6,000 snakes which have made their way into people’s homes. Of the six major venomous snakes in Taiwan, the cobra, the many-banded krait, the brown-spotted pit viper and the bamboo viper are the most frequently captured. The high concentration of bamboo vipers captured in Sinhua District is puzzling. Tainan Agriculture Bureau Forestry and Nature Conservation Division head Chu Chien-ming (朱健明) earlier this week said that the

Bidding was intense, and the tuna was ultimately jointly purchased by a local restaurant and a local company for NT$10,600 per kilogram — NT$300 ,more than last year — for a total of NT$2.014 million.
