Rose prices stable ahead of ‘White Valentine’s Day’

By Shelley Huang  /  STAFF REPORTER

Those unable to properly celebrate Valentine’s Day last month because it coincided with the first day of the Lunar New Year, may be pleased to know that flower prices are expected to remain steady in the run-up to “White Valentine’s Day” on Sunday.

White Valentine’s Day is also celebrated in Japan and South Korea.

Traditionally, women give chocolates or other gifts to their male friends or lovers on Valentine’s Day, and men reciprocate by giving chocolates or gifts to female friends or lovers on White Valentine’s Day.

Teng Yi-chin (鄧怡菁), a manager at the Taipei Flower Auction, recommended that customers who plan to shower their loved ones with flowers choose roses, because they symbolize love and because the price of roses is expected to remain steady as White Valentine’s Day approaches.

Council of Agriculture statistics showed that the average wholesale price for 20 roses ranged between NT$150 and NT$250. Lilies, on the other hand, were priced at between NT$150 to NT$250 for five stems wholesale.
