Three “virtual lanterns” with floral themes will be projected onto the exterior walls of Taipei City Hall starting on Friday as part of the Taipei Lantern Festival show that will run through March 7.
Taipei City’s Department of Cultural Affairs yesterday unveiled the three “virtual lanterns” designed by visual artists, using high-tech projectors to utilize the walls as a screen and display their works every 30 minutes between 7pm and 11pm during the festival.
The three designs feature flowers and bright colors to promote the Taipei International Flora Expo, which will open in November. The 30-minute visual art show will also feature folk songs and pop music, said Lee Ming-dao (李明道), the festival’s art director.

Lee said the team selected head shots of 6,666 people and will project them on the wall with a street view of Bopiliao (剝皮寮) as a backdrop. Bopiliao is a renovated area of the city’s Wanhua District (萬華) that has become a popular tourist attraction thanks to the film Monga (艋舺).
The festival will be held on streets adjacent to the city government building and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and along Renai Road.
The Taipei City Hall plaza will be closed to traffic until the end of the festival. Taipei City’s Department of Transportation called on visitors to use public transportation because the festival will attract large numbers of people.
