Zhang Yimou asked to produce show at Taroko

Hualien County Commissioner Fu Kun-chi (傅崑萁) has invited Chinese director Zhang Yimou (張藝謀) to produce an outdoor show at Taroko Gorge, local media reported yesterday.

Fu, an independent commissioner after he was ousted from the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) prior to his run in the Hualien County commissioner election on Dec. 5, was quoted by the Chinese-language China Times as saying that Zhang has sent a team to explore the location, but had yet to formally commit to the project.

Zhang designed the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

His production team is also known for creating the “Impression” series of shows in China’s West Lake, Lijiang and Guilin, mixing folklore and natural scenery.

Taroko Gorge is one of Taiwan’s most popular tourist attractions, featuring a 19km marble canyon next to towering cliffs.

If Zhang agrees to produce the show, it could help draw China and international tourists to Taiwan, Fu was quoted as saying.

Representatives for Zhang could not be reached for comment yesterday.
