The Deaflympics organizing committee yesterday denied it attempted to cover up an alleged sexual harassment case after a Spanish athlete allegedly admitted harassing a female volunteer in an elevator on Sunday.
The female volunteer accused the Spanish basketball player of holding her from behind and kissing her in the elevator on Sunday and reported the incident to the police.
The Spanish player allegedly admitted harassing the volunteer after being questioned at the police station on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim accepted the athlete’s apology and decided not to press charges.
The organizing committee did not make the case public until after the closing ceremony on Tuesday night.
The Spanish player and the whole team skipped the closing ceremony and left the country on Tuesday night after reaching an agreement with the volunteer.
President of the committee Emile Sheng (盛治仁) dismissed allegations that the committee tried to settle the dispute and prevent the incident from affecting the games.
He also denied that the committee had pressured the volunteer and had asked her not to press charges against the player.
Sheng said it took a while for the volunteer to identify the athlete at the police station and that not pressing charges was her decision.
“We reported the case to police immediately and she spent two days trying to identify the athlete. We did not try to cover up the incident,” he said.
Sheng said it took two days for the victim to identify the athlete and that police went over to his hotel and brought him in for questioning.
