MORAKOT: THE AFTERMATH: KMT postpones party elections and national congress

By Mo Yan-chih  /  STAFF REPORTER

The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) yesterday postponed two party elections and its national congress until October after President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) asked the party to delay the elections and focus its energy on disaster relief.

The national congress has been put back from Sept. 12 to Oct. 17. The election for central committee members is to be held on Sept. 27, while the election for the central standing committee members is to be held on Oct. 11.

Ma, who was elected KMT chairman last month and was scheduled to take over the chairmanship next month, called KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (吳伯雄) on Tuesday and asked him to consider delaying the national congress and the elections as the government was focusing on rescue and relief work in the wake of Morakot, KMT Spokesman Lee Chien-jung (李建榮) said.

“The president said we should make disaster rescue and relief the priority and Chairman Wu respected the chairman-elect’s decision,” Lee said.

Ma will now formally take over the party chairmanship during the party’s national congress in October.
